How to take care of your candle

  1. The first burn is the most important.  Trim the wick to 1/4" and place in a draft-free area.  The candle must have enough burn time to create a melt pool that extends to the edge of the jar.  This creates a "memory" and prevents the candle from tunneling during subsequent burns.
  2. Trim the wick to 1/4" after each burn.  Before relighting, use a wick trimmer to remove any mushroom that may be left from a previous burn.
  3. Try to avoid allowing a candle to burn for more than four hours.  The oils may become compromised and create smoke.
  4. Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame.  Blowing the candle out will create smoke, or "afterglow".
  5. Do not burn your candle all the way down. Leave about a half inch of wax at the bottom to prevent overheating and compromising the vessel.
  6. If reusing the jar or cement, place in the freezer.  The wax will shrink and make it easier to remove.
